Vandal-resistant glass for windows in Spain
· María Fernández · Safety and Security · 13 min read
Windows are the weakest point in home security. According to Spanish police statistics, 65% of burglaries occur through windows and glass doors. Regular glass breaks with a single blow, and a burglar can enter the house in 30-60 seconds. Vandal-resistant glass doesn’t make a window impenetrable, but it does increase the break-in time by 10-30 times. For burglars, time is of the essence. The longer they fiddle with a window, the higher the risk of being spotted. Most retreat if they can’t break in within 2-3 minutes.
Types of Vandal-Resistant Glass
Tempered Glass
Technology: Regular glass is heated to 650°C and then rapidly cooled. This creates internal stress, which increases its strength by 5-7 times.
Strength: Withstands impacts 5-7 times stronger than regular glass of the same thickness. Tempered glass 6 mm thick is stronger than regular 10 mm glass.
When broken: It shatters into small, blunt cubes measuring 5-10 mm. This is safe—you can’t cut yourself with large shards. However, the window no longer acts as a barrier—a hole in the glass allows access into the house.
Protection Class: There is no official burglar resistance classification. Tempered glass is stronger than standard glass, but it is not strictly vandal-proof.
Application: Mandatory for large glazing areas (more than 2 m²), high-rise windows (above the third floor), and glass doors. This protection prevents accidental impacts, but not targeted break-ins.
Cost: +40-60 euros per m² over the price of standard glass. 6 mm tempered glass costs 50-70 euros per m² versus 30-40 euros for standard glass. Cons:
- When broken, the window opens completely
- Cannot be cut or drilled after tempering
- Does not protect against targeted burglary
Laminated glass (triplex)
Technology: Two or three layers of glass are bonded with a polymer film (PVB - polyvinyl butyral). The 0.38-1.52 mm thick film holds the glass fragments together when broken.
Structure:
- Triplex 33.1: two 3 mm thick panes + one 0.38 mm thick film
- Triplex 44.2: two 4 mm thick panes + two films (0.76 mm)
- Triplex 55.4: two 5 mm thick panes + four films (1.52 mm)
The more films, the greater the strength and burglar resistance.
Durability: When struck, the glass cracks, but the shards remain on the film. The film stretches but does not tear. The window remains intact, although damaged.
Burglary Time:
- Triplex 33.1 — 1-2 minutes with a hammer
- Triplex 44.2 — 3-5 minutes
- Triplex 55.4 — 7-10 minutes
A burglar would need to break the glass, cut or tear the film, and then repeat on the other side. The noise and time involved deter most burglars.
Protection Classes according to EN 356:
- P1A — Protection against thrown stones and accidental impacts
- P2A — Protection against axes and hammers (3-5 minutes of operation)
- P4A — Serious protection against crowbars and sledgehammers (10-15 minutes)
- P5A — Protection against power tools (15-20 minutes)
P2A-P4A are sufficient for residential buildings. P5A and above are suitable for banks and jewelry stores.
Application: Ground floors of buildings, street-facing windows, patio doors, and homes in isolated, unsecured areas.
Cost:
- P2A (44.2): €80-120 per m²
- P4A (55.4): €150-200 per m²
- P5A and above: €250-400 per m²
Additional Benefits:
- Sound insulation 3-5 dB better than standard glass
- 99% UV protection — curtains and furniture will not fade
- Safety in case of breakage — no shards will fall
- Fall protection (upper-floor windows)
Cons:
- 2-4 times more expensive than standard glass
- Heavier — requires reinforced hardware
- Cannot be cut after manufacturing
Laminated Bulletproof Glass
Technology: 6-8 layers of glass bonded with polymer films. Total thickness: 20-40 mm.
Durability: Withstands sledgehammers, crowbars, and power tool attacks for 20-30 minutes. Some classes can withstand pistol and shotgun blasts.
Protection Classes:
- BR1-BR3 — Hand tool resistance
- BR4-BR7 — Bulletproof (various types of weapons)
Application: Banks, jewelry stores, government buildings, and high-risk buildings. Overkill for regular homes.
Cost: €400-€800 per m² and up. Special frames and reinforced hardware are also required, doubling the total cost.
Cons:
- Very expensive
- Very heavy (up to 100 kg/m²)
- Requires special frames and fasteners
- Overkill for residential buildings
Tempered Triplex
Technology: A combination of two technologies: the glass is tempered and then bonded with a film.
Advantages: Maximum strength: the glass is harder to break (tempering) plus the shards are held together by the film (lamination).
Application: Large glazing areas on ground floors, glass doors, windows in high-risk areas.
Cost: +30% to the price of standard triplex. Tempered triplex 44.2 costs €100-150 per m² versus €80-120 for standard triplex.
Burglar Resistance Classification According to EN 356
European standard EN 356 defines burglary resistance classes.
Class P1A-P2A: Protection against random vandalism
- Test: Impact with a 4.1 kg steel ball from a height of 1.5-9 meters
- Protection against thrown stones, bottles, and accidental impacts
- Break-in time with a tool: 1-3 minutes
- Application: Upper floors, windows facing the courtyard
Class P3A-P4A: Protection against hand tools (axe, hammer)
- Test: 30-50 blows with an axe over an area of 40x40 cm
- Glass cracks, but the film holds
- Break-in time: 5-10 minutes
- Application: Ground floors, windows facing the street, patio doors
Class P5A-P6A: Protection against power tools
- Test: Impacts with an axe + attempts to cut with a grinder or drill
- Break-in time: 15-30 minutes
- Application: High-risk, insulated buildings Villas
- Not suitable for most residential buildings
Class P7A-P8A: Maximum protection
- Test: Impact, cutting, and drilling for 30-70 minutes
- Application: Banks, jewelry stores, government buildings
- Not suitable for residential buildings
Recommendations for Spain:
- City apartments 2-5 floors: P1A-P2A sufficient
- Ground floors in the city: P2A-P3A
- Private homes in the city: P3A-P4A
- Isolated villas, rural areas: P4A-P5A
Protective films for ordinary glass
Technology: A thick polymer film (100-400 microns) is applied to ordinary glass from the inside.
Operating principle: When impacted, the glass breaks, but the fragments remain on the film. The film is held to the frame by a sealant around the perimeter.
Efficiency:
- 100-200 micron films — 30-90 second delay
- 300-400 micron films — 2-4 minute delay
- Less effective than laminated glass, but better than nothing
Advantages:
- Can be installed on existing windows without replacing the glass
- 3-4 times cheaper than laminated glass
- Quick installation — 30-40 minutes per window
- 99% UV protection
- 30-40% reduction in room heating (tinted films)
Disadvantages:
- Less durable than laminated glass
- Peels off at the edges over time (5-7 years of service life)
- If hit hard, the film may break off completely
- Does not provide an official protection rating
Cost:
- Film + installation: €30-60 per m²
- Cons 80-200 euros per square meter of laminated glass
Application: Temporary protection, budget-friendly solution, additional protection to other measures (alarms, bars).
Important: The film must be wrapped around the frame and sealed around the perimeter. If simply applied to the glass, the film will tear out along with the shards.
Burglar-resistant hardware
Vandal-resistant glass is only effective when combined with reinforced hardware. Burglars often force the sash open rather than break it.
Burglar-resistant cams (locks): Mushroom-shaped instead of oval. They engage the strike plate and engage it. When attempting to force the sash open, the cam rests against the strike plate and holds.
Number of locking points: Minimum 5 points for a standard-sized window, 7-9 for larger windows. More points make it more difficult to pry the sash open.
Reinforced hinges: Resist attempts to pry the sash open. Concealed hinges are better as they cannot be cut from the outside with a grinder.
Burglar-resistant strike plates: Reinforced steel plates on the frame. Standard strike plates can be broken off with a screwdriver.
Hardware resistance classes according to EN 1627:
- RC1: Minimum resistance to physical force (kicks, pushes)
- RC2: Resistance to screwdrivers, pliers, and wedge (3 minutes)
- RC3: Resistance to crowbars and prying tools (5 minutes)
- RC4: Resistance to power tools (10 minutes)
RC2-RC3 are optimal for residential buildings. RC4 is redundant and expensive.
Cost of burglar-resistant hardware: +80-150 euros to the window price. An extra 15-20%, but effective when combined with vandal-resistant glass.
Important: Vandal-resistant P4A glass with standard hardware is a waste of money. A burglar can pry open the sash in 30 seconds, and the glass won’t help. A comprehensive approach is needed.
Where vandal-proof protection is especially needed
Ground floors and basements
80% of window break-ins occur on the first two floors. A burglar can operate safely, hiding behind bushes, trees, or parked cars.
Recommendations:
- All first-floor windows should be at least P2A laminated glass
- Windows facing the street or in dark corners should be P3A-P4A
- Burglar-resistant hardware is required, RC2-RC3
- Bars or roller shutters are desirable
Alternative: Decorative grilles on the inside. Beautiful wrought iron grilles don’t spoil the view, but they create an additional barrier.
Patio doors and large windows
Panoramic doors are a favorite target for burglars. Large glass areas, typically facing the garden or terrace, are often hidden from neighbors’ view.
Recommendations:
- Tempered laminated glass, at least P3A, is required
- Lift-and-slide systems with burglar-resistant locks
- Additional locks at the top and bottom of the sash
- Glass-break sensors in the alarm system
Common mistake: They install expensive vandal-resistant glass but use cheap hardware. The sash can be forced open with a crowbar in a minute.
Isolated Houses and Villas
Houses in rural areas and isolated urban developments without security are high-risk areas. Burglars know their neighbors are far away, and the police will arrive in 15-20 minutes.
Recommendations:
- All windows and doors should be P4A-P5A laminated glass
- RC3 burglar-resistant hardware
- An alarm system with glass breakage sensors is required
- Roller shutters or external bars
- CCTV with recording
Statistics: In isolated, unprotected homes, the risk of burglary is 5-7 times higher than in urban areas.
Rear facades and windows not visible from the street
Burglars choose windows where passersby won’t see them. These include rear facades, windows facing the courtyard, and windows behind a high fence.
Recommendations:
- Enhanced security for these windows specifically – P3A-P4A laminated glass
- Opening and breakage sensors on the alarm
- Lighting with motion sensors
- CCTV cameras
Savings: It’s not necessary to install expensive glass on all windows. Front windows visible from the street can have standard glass. Protect vulnerable points.
Homes with valuables inside
If your home contains valuables (jewelry, paintings, expensive electronics), vandal-resistant glass is a must.
Recommendations:
- Comprehensive protection: P4A glass + RC3 hardware + alarm
- Property insurance usually requires a certain level of protection
- Consult your insurance company for requirements
Vandal-resistant protection and insurance
Many insurance companies in Spain reduce the cost of policies if burglar-resistant protection is included.
Insurance discounts:
- Alarm system — 10-15% discount
- P2A+ vandal-resistant glass — 5-10% discount
- RC2+ hardware — 5-10% discount
- Comprehensive protection — up to 30% discount
Insurance requirements: Some insurance companies require a minimum level of protection to pay out in the event of a robbery. Check your policy terms.
Certificates: Keep documents for vandal-resistant glass and hardware indicating the protection classes. This is required for insurance coverage in the event of a robbery.
Payback: A €100-200 annual insurance discount partially offsets the cost of vandal-resistant protection for 5-10 years.
Combined Protection
Maximum effectiveness is achieved by combining several measures.
Level 1 — Basic Security (city apartment):
- Tempered glass or P1A-P2A laminated glass
- Standard hardware with 3-5 locking points
- Peephole viewer and chain on the front door Cost: +100-200 euros over the cost of standard windows
Level 2 — Medium Security (first floor, private city home):
- P2A-P3A laminated glass on vulnerable windows
- RC2 burglar-resistant hardware
- Basic alarm with opening sensors
- Lighting with motion sensors Cost: +500-1000 euros over the cost of standard windows + 300-500 euros for the alarm
